WeMatter

Foundation

Foundation is WeMatter's guided reflection process for understanding what supports your best work, what is getting in the way, and what should shape the next stage of your development.

Overview

Foundation is the part of WeMatter that establishes personal context before the platform moves into review and development.

It asks a simple but important question: what needs to be true for this person to do their best work? Instead of treating performance as something that can be read from ratings alone, Foundation surfaces the conditions, motivators, pressures, and future direction that sit underneath it.

That makes the rest of WeMatter more credible. Without Foundation, later conversations can still happen, but they are more likely to miss the personal context that explains why work feels the way it does.

What Foundation establishes

Foundation creates the baseline for the wider WeMatter journey. It gives people language for what matters, what is currently working, and what should influence the next stage of development.

Clearer self-understanding

Foundation helps people define the conditions, priorities, and motivators that shape how they work at their best.

Stronger context for review

It gives frameworks, scorecards, and goals a more grounded picture of the person behind the process.

A baseline worth revisiting

It creates a reference point that people and organisations can return to as circumstances, priorities, and direction change over time.

Where Foundation fits in WeMatter

Foundation sits at the start of the wider WeMatter flow.

It gives context before the platform moves into competency frameworks, scorecards, and goals. Frameworks define the capability model. Scorecards gather evidence and alignment. Goals turn that picture into ongoing development work. Foundation is what explains the person inside that sequence.

That is why Foundation should not be confused with a lightweight onboarding step. It is an active reference point. People revisit it because motivators shift, pressures change, work-life harmony moves, and future direction becomes clearer, more ambitious, or more complicated over time.

The five-part reflection

Foundation is built as a five-part reflection, with each step adding a different layer to the overall picture.

Work Life Harmony

A reflection on what balance or intensity looks like for you and whether your current reality supports it.

Professional Priorities

The external workplace conditions that matter most to you, such as autonomy, recognition, flexibility, or impact.

Personal Drivers

The internal motivators that shape the kind of work and life direction that feels meaningful.

Current Performance

A high-level reflection on current performance and the degree to which context may be influencing it.

Horizon Mapping

A look forward at the opportunities, aspirations, and future direction that feel important from here.

Each step does a different job. The value comes from how they read together. By the end, Foundation should feel less like a set of disconnected answers and more like a coherent explanation of what supports this person's best work.

How the Foundation flow works

In the product, Foundation moves through a clear cycle. It is launched with a deadline, completed section by section, reviewed on the summary page, and then submitted to formalise it. Once submitted, it becomes read-only until it is unsubmitted again.

That structure matters. It keeps the reflection stable enough to be useful later whilst still allowing it to be revisited and updated deliberately when something important has changed.

Why Foundation matters later

Foundation continues to shape the platform after the reflection itself has been completed.

It gives managers and WeMatter leads a clearer understanding of what supports or blocks a person's best work. It gives scorecards a more grounded personal context. And it can inform goal generation later, especially when WeMatter is using multiple sources together to suggest the next development step.

So although Foundation happens early, it keeps influencing how the rest of the journey is interpreted.
