Goal progress

See whether staff are successfully working towards their goals, who needs attention and why.

Overview

Goal progress is a live Signals dashboard. It answers one question:

Are staff successfully working towards their goals?

Every member of staff gets one status, from overdue to achieved, including people with no live goal. Beneath that, the dashboard shows what is in play at each level (goals, objectives and achievables), how much gets done each week, and how departments, regions, managers and WeMatter leads compare.

It recalculates from today's data each time you open it. Statuses reflect today; the chosen period sets what counts as achieved and recent. The default period is the last 90 days.

Organisation admins and WeMatter RPO users can open it from Signals.

What is counted

Staff

Staff are the people in your organisation whose profiles are not deleted. Admins are included. WeMatter RPO users are not.

Goals

The dashboard counts each person's live goals (goals not yet achieved) and the goals they achieved in the chosen period. Deleted goals are never counted.

  • Individual goals count as their owner's goals.
  • When someone takes part in a business goal, their linked goal counts once as one of their goals. The business goal itself is not counted separately, and linked goals of a deleted business goal are left out.
  • A goal is achieved when it is marked complete or its status is Achieved. Its achieved date is the date it was completed or, where no date was saved, the date its status changed to Achieved.

Progress and expected progress

Progress is the share of achievables ticked off. For a goal, each objective counts equally: a completed objective counts in full, and an objective with no achievables counts as none. A goal with no objectives counts as 0% progress. So a goal with nine of its ten achievables ticked off is 90% of the way there even before any objective is closed.

Expected progress is the time elapsed between the goal or objective being set and its deadline, as a percentage. Goals without a deadline have no expected progress.

Both figures are rounded to whole percentages before they are compared, so the figures on screen always agree with the status.

This differs from the Goals directory

The Goals directory measures a goal by its completed objectives. This dashboard uses achievables instead, so its figures can be higher.

Statuses

Each person is counted once, using the first status that applies to any of their live goals. Status reflects today. The status counts always add up to the number of staff.

StatusMeaning
OverdueA goal or objective that is still open is past its deadline. A deadline that falls today is not yet overdue.
BehindProgress on a goal is at least 20 points below where the time elapsed says it should be. Progress is the share of achievables ticked off, weighted by objective.
StalledNo progress on any goal in the last 30 days. Progress means a written update, an achievable ticked off, an objective or goal completed, or a status change. Comments and business goal broadcasts don’t count. The 30 days start no earlier than the person’s oldest live goal was set.
On trackAt least one goal in progress and none of the above apply.
AchievedNothing still in progress, and at least one goal achieved in the chosen period.
No live goalsNo goal in progress, and none achieved in the chosen period.

Overdue, Behind, Stalled and On track only apply to people with a live goal. Overdue, Behind and Stalled together are counted as Need attention.

Self-reported at risk

Someone has marked one of the person’s goals as at risk. It is shown alongside the status rather than replacing it.

Goals, objectives and achievables

Three cards show the live items at each level by state, and how many were finished in the period.

How pace is measured

Each live goal and objective is compared with where the time elapsed says it should be, as of today.

StateMeaning
ProgressThe share of achievables ticked off. For a goal, each objective counts equally: a completed objective counts in full, and an objective with no achievables counts as none. A goal with no objectives counts as 0% progress.
Expected progressThe time elapsed between the goal or objective being set and its deadline, as a percentage.
On paceProgress is less than 20 points below expected progress.
BehindProgress is at least 20 points below expected progress.
Past deadlineStill open after its deadline. A deadline that falls today is not yet past.
No deadlineNo deadline is set, so there is no expected progress. It is never behind, but its owner can still be stalled.
Achieved or completed this periodGoals achieved, and objectives completed, between the start and end of the chosen period.

How achievables are counted

Live achievables are those not yet ticked off, under open objectives on goals still in progress.

StateMeaning
Not yet dueDue in more than 14 days, or no deadline set.
Due in 14 daysDue today or within the next 14 days.
Past deadlineNot ticked off by its deadline. Late achievables are counted here, not in anyone’s status.
Ticked off this periodAchievables ticked off between the start and end of the chosen period.

Progress made each week

The weekly chart stacks achievables ticked off, objectives completed and goals achieved in each week of the period, with the total above each column.

What counts as progress

The weekly chart counts work completed. A person’s last progress also counts written updates and status changes.

EventHow it counts
Achievable ticked offCounted in the week it was ticked off.
Objective completedCounted in the week it was marked complete.
Goal achievedCounted in the week it was achieved. Where no achieved date was saved, the date its status changed to Achieved is used.
Written updates and status changesAn update written on a goal, objective or achievable, or a change to a goal’s status. These count towards a person’s last progress, not the weekly chart.
Not countedComments on updates, and updates broadcast from a business goal.
WeeksWeeks start on Monday. Only completions within the chosen period are counted, so the first and last columns can cover part of a week.

Breakdown

The breakdown groups staff by department, region, manager or WeMatter lead, lowest share on track or achieved first. Select a row to see those people in the People list.

Grouping uses each person's current department, region, managers and WeMatter leads.

Group totals can exceed your staff total

People with several managers or WeMatter leads appear under each of them in the breakdown, so group totals can add up to more than the number of staff.

People

The People card has a pace map and a list. Search and filters apply to both. The list shows ten people per page, with overdue people first, then behind, stalled, no live goals, on track and achieved.

How to read the pace map

Each dot is a person with a live goal, placed by how far behind their furthest-behind goal is and how long it has been since their last progress.

PartMeaning
AcrossDays since the person’s last progress, counted from no earlier than when their oldest live goal was set. Anything over 90 days sits at the right edge.
Up and downPoints ahead of or behind expected progress on the person’s furthest-behind live goal with a deadline. People whose live goals have no deadline sit on the 0 line.
Dashed lines20 points behind and 30 days since progress: the thresholds for Behind and Stalled.
RingsOverdue people are ringed.
Not plottedPeople who have achieved everything in the period or have no live goal.
Selecting a dotFinds that person in the list below the map.

The period, filters and grouping are kept in the page address, so you can bookmark or share a view with colleagues who have access.

Downloads

Download CSV offers three files. Each one uses the chosen period and filters.

  • People: one row per person in the People list, including any status, search or group you have narrowed it to, with status, pace and roles.
  • Goals: one row per live goal and per goal achieved in the period, with progress, expected progress, deadline and counts of objectives and achievables.
  • Breakdown: the current grouping, one row per group.

Thresholds

The thresholds (20 points behind, 30 days without progress and 14 days until an achievable is due) are fixed for now and may be tuned.
